Utah Code 58-3a defines when drawings require a licensed architect. For residential construction, the IRC exempts single-family and duplex buildings from licensed architect requirements. However, in practice, all Utah new construction requires PE-stamped structural drawings for a permit — and the complexity of SDC D structural design necessitates licensed structural engineering. For commercial construction, IBC-governed buildings (most commercial and multi-family) require licensed architectural drawings. For residential remodeling and additions, most work can proceed without a licensed architect if drawings meet permit documentation standards. RainFire Builders works with licensed architects for projects requiring architectural stamps and prepares contractor-generated drawings for projects where contractor drawings are acceptable under Utah Code and the specific AHJ’s requirements.
