A Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zone is where developed land abuts wildland vegetation — creating elevated fire risk. On the Wasatch Front, WUI zones include the foothill communities of Sandy, Draper, and Cottonwood Heights. Projects in WUI zones require International Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC) compliance: Class A fire-rated roofing assembly; ember-resistant attic and foundation vents (1/8″ mesh or listed products); ignition-resistant exterior wall cladding; and non-combustible or ignition-resistant decks within 10 feet of the main structure. WUI review is performed by the building department in coordination with the local fire marshal and requires a WUI hazard mitigation plan in the permit package. RainFire Builders specifies WUI-compliant materials at the estimate stage for all foothill projects and includes WUI compliance documentation in the permit package at first submission.
