Almost every kitchen design decision drives a specific rough-in dimension, utility location, or structural requirement. Cabinet layout determines blocking and nailer locations (before framing). Island location determines electrical outlet locations on the floor or base (NEC 210.52(C)) and any structural provisions. Range location determines gas rough-in and electrical circuit (before plumbing and electrical rough-in). Refrigerator location determines the electrical circuit and optional ice maker water supply. Range hood design determines exhaust duct routing through cabinets and structure. NKBA kitchen design guidelines (48-inch minimum clearance in traffic corridors, 42-inch minimum clearance in work aisles, landing space at each appliance) must be verified against the floor plan before framing. These decisions must be made and documented before the construction phases they affect — not evolving mid-construction as the client changes their mind about appliance placement.
