Lighting design must be finalized before electrical rough-in because every light source requires a specific electrical box location that cannot be moved after drywall without demolition. The lighting design deliverable includes: a lighting plan showing all fixture locations and switching arrangements; a fixture schedule specifying each fixture by manufacturer, model, color temperature (CCT in Kelvin — 2700–3000K for warm residential; 3500–4000K for task areas), and CRI (90+ recommended for task and cosmetic lighting); and a switching/dimmer schedule specifying compatible dimmers for all LED circuits. Recessed downlights, pendant drop boxes, wall sconce boxes, and under-cabinet circuits are all located during the electrical rough-in based on the lighting plan. Without a lighting plan before rough-in, the electrician places boxes generically — which routinely produces pendant drops not centered over islands, sconces not centered on sink bowls, and recessed cans that create shadows rather than illuminate tasks.
