Fiberglass composite doors lead in Utah’s conditions: UV-resistant without fading or checking, no denting, no warping with seasonal moisture cycling (a real issue with wood doors in Utah’s humidity swings between summer monsoon and winter dry), R-5 to R-10 insulating core values, and capable of accepting paint or stain finishes that mimic wood grain. Insulated steel doors with polyurethane foam core and thermally broken frame are a cost-effective alternative with excellent security and comparable thermal performance. Solid wood doors offer attractive aesthetics and can be appropriate — but require more maintenance in Utah’s climate, conduct cold at the frame perimeter, and swell and bind in humid conditions if not properly sealed. Critical point: the door slab performance only matters if the threshold, weatherstripping system, and door sweep are properly installed and maintained. A properly sealed code-minimum fiberglass door outperforms a neglected high-performance door with a worn threshold and a missing door sweep. RainFire Builders installs entry doors as a complete scope — frame, slab, hardware, threshold, weatherstripping, and rough opening air sealing — because the slab alone installed is half the job.
