New drywall requires a minimum of three applications: a PVA drywall primer (to seal the paper face and joint compound uniformly), followed by two coats of finish paint. Skipping the PVA primer causes flashing — joint compound and face paper absorb paint differently, showing as uneven sheen even after multiple finish coats. In Utah’s dry air each coat dries fast, but paint applied too quickly can fail to bond if recoat windows are not respected. RainFire Builders always applies a dedicated drywall primer before any finish paint on new construction.
