Standard all-purpose joint compound requires a minimum of 24 hours between coats at 65–75°F and 40–60% relative humidity. In Utah’s very dry winter air (often 10–25% indoor humidity), compound can skin over quickly but may crack beneath the surface if it dries too fast — particularly in thin applications. Our crews monitor indoor conditions and use lightweight or setting-type compounds where appropriate to maintain finish quality regardless of season. Rushing the drying process is one of the most common causes of cracking and popping seams.
